Curriculum Vitae

Raymond Russell received his Ph.D. in sociology from Harvard University in 1979.  Since then he has been a member of the Department of Sociology at the University of California, Riverside.  Russell has studied workplaces that are owned and/or controlled by their labor force in a wide range of contexts, from worker-owned firms in the U.S., to cooperatives in Israel, to privatized workplaces in post-reform Russia.  Results of these studies have appeared in such journals as Industrial Relations, Work and Occupations, and Economic and Industrial Democracy, and in two books published by State University of New York Press, Sharing Ownership in the Workplace (1985) and Utopia in Zion: The Israeli Experience with Worker Cooperatives (1995).  In recent years his research has focused on changes currently taking place in the kibbutzim.  Articles describing results of these studies have appeared in Research in the Sociology of Work (2006), Advances in the Economic Analysis of Participatory and Labor-Managed Firms (2010), and Israel Studies (2011).
