James Love

Degrees Received:

BA, Sociology, UCSB, 2007

Awards:

Graduate Division Fellowship, 2007

Research Areas:

Race, American Foreign Policy, and globalization

Biography:

I want to focus my research on race both in its domestic (American manifestations) and in its foreign manifestations.  In terms of the domestic, I wanted to focus on the political and cultural ideology of a "colorblind" America. It is my belief that this ideology, stifles that struggles for racial justice and equity mainly though the political system. It accepts a view that states racial equity has been achieved and there is no longer a need for individuals or governments to put forth racially equitable initiatives or policies. In terms of race as a "foreign" entity I mean race as it is used by America (government, corporations, etc.) to further global exploitation. This applies, in my view, to corporate globalization and the exploitation of "people of color" throughout the world for the benefit of largely white masters. It also applies to the practice of our government creating a nemesis based upon race and using this creation of the "other" as a justification for foreign invasions and conquests. One side-note, I am also very interested in studying whiteness as a racial category and understanding the unearned benefits that accompanying its manifestations (i.e. white privilege).
