Biography:

I am currently preparing to take a second qualifying exam before turning my full attention to my dissertation. I am still figuring out exactly what that will look like, but am particularly interested in how the law is used as a tool of repression and how people resist this repression. One basic form of resistance is knowing and invoking your rights. However, I am interested in looking at where knowing your rights breaks down and what would inhibit people from invoking their rights ( e.g., the prevalence of police brutality in poor communities and communities of color). I am also part of a research team focused on transnational social movements that traveled to the World Social Forum in Porto Alegre, Brazil in January 2005 to conduct survey research and engage in participant observation. We will also attend and conduct research at the 2007 WSF in Nairobi, Kenya. (For more info, visit the "projects" page at www.irows.ucr.edu.) I am involved in various, intersecting movements for social justice and my scholarship is very much informed by my activism.
