Stalin received a BA in Criminology and Justice Studies and an MA in Sociological Practice from California State University, San Marcos. He entered UCR in Fall 2016. His areas of specialization include race & class inequalities and criminology. He focuses on gangs and adolescent subcultures. His research examines the individualistic logic of the criminal justice system – a logic that pathologizes and criminalizes youth of color – and how this logic has begun to pervade community institutions that have traditionally been more nurturing of youth. His research shows how Chicana/o youth are not only trapped and profiled by the police, but also by community members, leading to a hyper-criminalization of youth by multiple institutions.
